San Diego based photographer Mike Walrond uses a lot of of expiremental techniques to create his stunning photographs. He tried out a few of our films and was so kind to also answer our questions.
Where are you from, how old are you?
I’m from Everett Washington, but I reside in San Diego, CA and I’m 33 years old.
Would you like to tell us a bit about yourself and how your love for photography came to life?
I got into photography by accident. About three years ago I was working in the creative corporate world in Los Angeles, I was part of a huge team doing 50 international commercials for Procter & Gamble’s Tampax brand. During the project I met the creative director, Christopher Everett and we became fast friends. Back then I was deeply consumed by graphic art / editing images, Everett looked at my work and said, “Stop using other people’s images to create your art!” I can’t remember if it was days or a week later, but Everett showed up with a Leica Dlux and gave it to me. From that point on I made it my mission to maniplate images without any post production or editing software. I used projections, colored light, iridescent oragami paper as filters, and space blankets as backdrops.
Do you professionally work as a photographer?
Yes.
Why do you like to take analog pictures? Do you shoot digital as well?
I shoot analog because it has a beautiful hypnotic depth like nothing else. And I stopped shooting digital all together about 2 1/2 years ago.
Do you have a favorite subject to photograph? If so, why?
Portraits, I love connecting and capturing raw emotion.
What’s your favorite analog camera?
My Nikon F3 with Motordrive.
Do you have a favorite revolog film?
They are all great, but it’s the Tesla 1 and the Solar by Dubble Film.
Do you have a favourite photograph (revolog or not) of yours that you would like to share with us (and the story behind it)?
Oh man, I’m not going to pick one, but here’s a few of my favorites.
These were cross processed in E6 developer.
Any advice for other aspiring photographers?
Experiment, fuck shit up, and don’t ever limit yourself creatively.
Do you have any future projects you’d like to talk about?
I’m working on a double exposure portrait series for my solo show in Feb at Teros Gallery in San Diego, CA.
