Artist Feature – Detlef Honigstein

We were following Detlef Honigstein’s amazing fashion photography for some time now and were extremely excited when Detlef got in touch and shared a bunch of wonderful pictures that were all taken with revolog films with us. We couldn’t let the chance pass by to interview him for our artist feature.

Where are you from, how old are you?

I’m from the universe and my age is just a number

Would you care to tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to be a photographer?

I started to take photos when I was a kid, I designed my own cassette covers, photo collages & Selfmade graphic elements that I printed with our shitty printers at home. Later i saw many other photographers work and i always stood behind them feeling my own vision of what’s was happening there and so I started to follow that feeling of I want to do something myself, saved money for a good camera and teached myself how to use it, I love manual construction  and I also keep on asking everyone I know about these things.

Do you professionally work as a photographer?

Sometimes. As I am a professional in another department of the creative Industrie I try to keep photography as my playground of being wild & free, not serving anyone. I only do bookings that leave me free in what want to create.

Why do you like to take analog pictures? Do you shoot digital as well?

I actually started digital. And more and more I felt my time stolen by the work afterwards.I like to retouch too and it’s fun to play around with photos in photoshop and to create a look and fix things. But I have no time for that and I’m to picky to give it away.. hahah  Also i celebrate more and more the realness of my models and motives, no need anymore of color correcting, crops, body morphing … it’s so refreshing for the brain and it gives me a huge satisfaction to have a finish result after process and scanning. To choose the film before and so decide the look.  I need no computer to do my work, that’s great.

Do you have a favorite subject to photograph? If so, why?

Woman and cars. I see a lot of beauty in that.

What’s your favorite analog camera?

I’m cheesy in love with praktica cameras from 1972-82 . It’s something about these so called East German Minolta and it was the first analog camera I’ve got as a present from my grandfather. They work well with good zeiss lenses.

Do you have a favorite revolog film?

Yess! Rasp, Kolor and Streak

Do you have any future projects you’d like to talk about?

I’m looking forward to start over with my new Mamiya. Can’t wait to rock it and grow with it
